Terrace Elementary student shines as a Communicator & Collaborator

At Terrace Elementary School (TCE), one fourth grader is showing how strong communication and teamwork can make all the difference in learning and life. Meet Mila, a student who loves helping others, sharing ideas, and leading by example.

Mila says what she enjoys most about being a student at Terrace is simple, she loves learning. Whether she’s helping classmates understand a lesson, playing games with friends, or putting away books in the media center, she always finds ways to connect and contribute.

To Mila, being a good communicator starts with listening. She explains, “It means being a good listener when others are talking and being respectful of their ideas.”

That mindset served her well during a recent science project. As the project manager for her team’s pinball machine design, a few setbacks left the group behind schedule. Mila stepped in to guide the team forward. “I asked my group what we needed to do to get back on track,” she said. “Everyone shared ideas, and we agreed on a solution to finish on time.”

She’s learned that teamwork works best when everyone’s voice matters. “I try to listen to everyone’s suggestions and find a way to include their ideas,” she said.

Mila credits her teachers, and even her younger self, for helping her develop those collaboration skills. “I’ve always liked to help my friends, even when I was only in kindergarten,” she said. “My teachers appreciated me being their assistant in class.”

Celebrating success as a team is also part of what makes learning fun. “My teachers and friends celebrate people who do well and reach their goals, especially when we accomplish something together,” Mila shared. “One of my best friends, Harper, always celebrates us by giving high fives and saying, ‘I’m happy that you got it!’”

Looking ahead, Mila already understands that communication and collaboration are essential life skills. “Being a good communicator is important because you can’t work together without it,” she said. “And collaborating is important because other people might have really good ideas.”

She also knows those skills will take her far in the future. “Communication skills will help me present myself and my work better, so I can advance in my career.”

With that thoughtful approach and positive attitude, Mila is already proving what it means to be a true communicator and collaborator, one who lifts others up and helps her whole team succeed. Learn more about the Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Ready Graduate here.
